Unpub 3View: Pirates of the Carbon Copy

As we approach Unpub 3 we’re featuring many of the games being presented at the big event. Today we’re taking a look at Pirates of the Carbon Copy by designers Darrell Louder and TC Petty III.

Both designers have games signed with Dice Hate Me Games, and the two have been friends since the first Unpub. Through all the events and adventures together it was only a matter of time before they started putting together something...well, together. If you know either of them, you'll know that it wasn't going to some dry themed Euro they were going to make...it might even be explosive.

Darrell sat down and filled out our survey, let's hear what he has to say about Pirates of the Carbon Copy...

What was your inspiration for Pirates of the Carbon Copy? A joke T.C. Petty and I had about pirate accountants sailing the seas. Then it snow balled from there, and we thought to ourselves- this could be a pretty decent game.

What is your favorite part of Pirates of the Carbon Copy? I would have to say the rondels. If you are a fan of rondels, then you'll LOVE this game... being it has about 22 of them 🙂

To your knowledge, What do other people find most interesting about Pirates of the Carbon Copy? I'm not sure, as only TC and I have played this. So it'll be BRAND new to everyone at Unpub.

What has been the most challenging part of designing Pirates of the Carbon Copy? Finding time to work on it. The only reason we have a game now is because TC stayed with me for a week, a sort of 'gamers retreat' where we focused on building the entire game from the bottom up. Now TC and I have been working on the game solely through Google Docs... so it can (and has) get confusing.

What advice would you give to players attempting Pirates of the Carbon Copy for the first time?  Manage your booty well, or you will pay the price. Don't go too slow to the finish- but you don't want to rush either. You have to balance so many things, and keep receipts. SO management is key!

What has surprised you most in play-tests of Pirates of the Carbon Copy?  That the game works! Seriously, our very first play test we were both surprised that the game was playable, and good! We have tweaked it since then to make it a bit more strategic... but yeah.

People who like___________ will like Pirates of the Carbon Copy. Why?    Pirates, rondels, sailing, resource management- this game caters to a lot of loves for euro gamers... so I think it has the possibility for a very wide audience.

What do you hope to accomplish at Unpub 3? Everyone to back Compounded (on KickStarter January 18th) but then to tell attending publishers how AMAZING Pirates of the Carbon Copy is.

Tell us anything else you want to say about Pirates of the Carbon Copy that I haven't asked or you haven't said already. - Working with TC on a game has been nothing but pure fun. I hope to do it again in the near future.
