Unpub Preview: Leaf Creepers
As we move towards upcoming Unpub events we’re going to preview some of the games which will be exhibited.
It's not Arbor Day yet...and it's not really the fall either, but we certainly have a TREEt coming to Myriad Games in Manchester on Sunday March 17! Glenn Given of Games by Play Date is bringing his abstract strategy Leaf Creepers! In this game players will "flip hexagonal tiles to transform the forest to their color of choice. Use the breeze to peek under the hexes and trigger special actions to expand your color territory. Claim the most forest to win!" I think this is the first game about foliage I've ever really come across. Color me intrigued!
Let's have Glen tell us more about the burnt umbers and siennas of this game...
What was your inspiration for Leaf Creepers? It originally began as a battle of the bands attempting to switch audience members to their side. In development I found the Autumn theme more elegant and it made accommodating multiple players more sensible
What is your favorite part of Leaf Creepers? I like the slightly random peeking element that the Breeze value represents. By moving the access to information around the table it helps keep play unpredicatble
To your knowledge, What do other people find most interesting about Leaf Creepers? Players really enjoy pulling off tricky captures by pushing hexes off the board that then wrap around to the opposite side.
What has been the most challenging part of designing Leaf Creepers? Removing capabilities. We initially started with almost twice as many trigger abilities. Many of them were interesting but ran counter to the flow of the game.
What advice would you give to players attempting Leaf Creepers for the first time? Don't box yourself in.
People who like______will like Leaf Creepers. Why? Othello, Hey! That's My Fish!
What do you hope to accomplish at the Myriad Manchester Unpub Mini on Sunday March 17? I want to shake out the appropriate board size for Leaf Creepers.
So, try Leaf Creepers, a game with a local theme from a local designer at a local store! Thanks Glenn (and Dan and Meg!)
