Unpub 3View: The Great Bricks of Giza

As we approach Unpub 3 we’re featuring many of the games being presented at the big event. Today we’re taking a look at Dan Cassar's The Great Bricks of Giza.

The Great Bricks of Giza is an imaginative upgrade to Saqqara, a game firs introduced during an Unpub Mini in the spring of last year. The fundamentals of the game remained, but the components have had a drastic change. Cards have become LEGOs.  That's right, this is a Euro-style LEGO-building game. Not sure I thought I'd ever hear of such an animal.

Let's find out more about this creative new approach in today's Unpub 3View...

What was your inspiration for The Great Bricks of Giza? After a trip to Egypt, I wanted to make a game about building the pyramids. Originally, this was a card game called Saqqara, but I decided the game would work better in 3D, and so LEGO was an obvious choice.

What is your favorite part of The Great Bricks of Giza? The unique auction system, and allies with special abilities.

To your knowledge, What do other people find most interesting about The Great Bricks of Giza? The unique auction system, and allies with special abilities.

What has been the most challenging part of designing The Great Bricks of Giza? - The game has completely changed several times, and I think this has been a learning process to me. While I really like where I've gotten the game to in terms of its overall structure, it still needs lots and lots of refinement.

What advice would you give to players attempting The Great Bricks of Giza for the first time? Don't overlook the black and white pieces, especially if you're one of the high-bidders.

People who like___________ will like The Great Bricks of Giza. Why?  Knizia's games, because this is a medium-light, auction-based game that still manages good depth with a minimum of rules. That, and because he too loves the Egyptian theme.

What do you hope to accomplish at Unpub 3? I need more 5-player games!

NOTE: Great Bricks of Giza will only be available on Sunday January 20th!
