Unpub 3View: AtataT

As we head towards Unpub 3, I’m going to start previewing the games people will experience at the event.

Charlie Hoopes checks in with us today about his game AtataT. Charlie founded a company (HoopCAT Games) to publish his first game Fill The Barn, and continues to design innovative and interesting games.

AtataT is a path building game that was presented at a handful of Unpub events this year. The feedback and audience opinion for the game started positive and remain positive. We're happy to see this great game come back for Unpub 3 so it can be experienced by more players and make more fans!

Charlie filled out our 3View Survey, so let's hear about this AtataT in his own words...

What was your inspiration? I defer to Divine inspiration for any game idea. I have no other explanation for the game brainstorms that work.

What is your favorite part of AtataT? The unknown - I am the designer, and I still haven't figured out the best winning strategies to my own game.

To your knowledge, What do other people find most interesting about AtataT?   How the playing area disappears as the game progresses.

What has been the most challenging part of designing AtataT? The physical components - how to lay planks, remove planks, and remove tiles in a manner that is not awkward or annoying to the play.

What advice would you give to players attempting AtataT  for the first time? Keep an eye on the other players. Don't concentrate so much on building your paths that you ignore which tiles your opponents may be about to remove.

What has surprised you most in play-tests of AtataT ? How often players want to play it again.

People who like___________ will like AtataT . Why?   That's a tough one - Chess?? AtataT is abstract strategy, although not as deep as chess.

What do you hope to accomplish at Unpub3? Feedback on components, thoughts on whether they would like the game best in wood, plastic, or cardstock.

Tell us anything else you want to say about  AtataT that I haven't asked or you haven't said already.  Pronounced AT a tat. (Rhymes with ratatat of a machine gun).

You'll find several photos over on the AtataT page, but here for the first time is some video of the game being played at the Unpub Mini at Labyrinth Game Shop.
